Gibraltar
Gibraltar is a British Overseas Territory, about 50 minutes drive from Bahía de Casares. It is known for its rich history and the imposing Gibraltar Rock, which dominates the landscape.
Historical and Strategic Significance
Gibraltar Rock has enormous historical and strategic significance. Due to its location, it has been a key point for controlling sea routes between the Mediterranean and the Atlantic for centuries. The rock was fortified and played an important role during many conflicts, including the Siege of Gibraltar and World War II, when it was used as a military base.
Nature Reserve
Much of the rock is now part of the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, which protects the local flora and fauna. The most famous inhabitants of the rock are the Barbary macaques, the only wild primates in Europe. According to legend, Gibraltar will remain under British control as long as the macaques live here.
Tourist Attractions
- Gibraltar Rock: Also The Rock of Gibraltar, is a limestone rock formation that you can reach by cable car (Gibraltar Cable Car) and enjoy panoramic views. It is located at a strategic location at the Strait of Gibraltar, which connects the Mediterranean Sea to the Atlantic Ocean and separates Europe from Africa. Morocco is so close you can almost throw a stone across, and the rest you can swim 😊.
- St. Michael’s Cave: A beautiful natural cave inside the rock with lighting and music located in the Upper Rock Nature Reserve, over 300 meters above sea level. The cave is famous for its breathtaking stalactites and stalagmites, formed over thousands of years by seeping rainwater. It is one of Gibraltar’s most popular attractions.
- Skywalk: A viewing platform with panoramic views.
- Monkeys: In the Upper Rock Nature Reserve area, you can also observe the aforementioned macaques. And not only that, you can also feed them, take pictures with them and let them climb on your shoulders. Especially children will be delighted. 🙂 But watch out for backpacks, phones, snacks. Macaques are as sassy as… monkeys!
